The Internet: The greatest invention?
May 1, 2008 – 11:38 am
Below is an article of mine that I would like to share with you all. It was originally written for an online magazine, but the editor of the magazine seems to have forgotten about the project. I don’t want my work going to waste, so without further ado here it is on my own space.
The Internet is used by millions of people around the world. It is a very useful tool to find, share and manage information. Never before has such a versatile and valuable resource been available to so many people at such a low cost. Could it be possible the Internet is the greatest invention?
The Internet came about in the 1960s, before the term “Internet” was even invented. During that time it was known as ARPANET. The Internet was the result of visionary thinking and great potential value in allowing computers to share information on research and development in scientific and military fields. The Internet wasn’t always user-friendly, in the early stages it was used by computer experts, scientists and librarians. The users had to learn to use the very complex system. In 1991 the first user-friendly interface was developed at the University of Minnesota and in 1993 the browser Mosaic gave Internet usage a big boost. The creator of Mosaic went on to produce the more well-known browser, Netscape. Later on Microsoft released its own browser, Internet Explorer. This present day more browsers have become available, such as Mozilla Firefox and Opera.
The Internet has changed a lot since the 90s. More and more people are using it and now it can be used for a variety of tasks. These include finding and sharing information, keeping in contact with friends and family, playing multiplayer games and discussion. The Internet has no doubt changed people’s lives. People can now find their perfect partner online, people can buy and sell their belongings, people can do their shopping without leaving the house, and companies advertise their products and services on web pages to reach a wider market. You can find old friends on social networking sites; you can create your own web page or blog and publish your opinions and daily life for worldwide users to see. The list can go on and on.
The Internet is a place where anybody can have an opinion. It is a haven for freedom of speech. You can discover new and exciting cultures, ideas and information. Internet connections have become faster and lower in price. Literally anybody can gain Internet access. All you need is a computer and a telephone line. If you can’t get your own Internet access, there are now Internet cafes and most libraries have computers for public use.
Is it possible the Internet could be the greatest invention created? Of course there have been other inventions that have revolutionised the way people live. One example is electricity, without that many household appliances would be useless, including computers. However, the Internet has not only changed the way we live, it has possibly changed the way we think. Being able to be in contact with people from all over the world has allowed us to discover new ideas and views. Television has affected us this way, too, but on the Internet there are less restrictions and more people are able to express themselves due to freedom of speech. Whether the Internet is the greatest invention is up to each person. Everybody will have their own opinion but nobody can deny that the Internet is a great invention that we should feel lucky to have.
Feel free to give me your feedback on the article or the topic. What does the Internet mean to you? Is it a big thing? Not so big? Discuss.

May 1st, 2008 at 1:55 pmSo why aint you got a job, the problem you got is, you may be good doing web design in your own personal time but businesses dont want people like you because they have no idea how you will work in a working environment so they pick people who have got twice more experience than you and better qualified than you. My advice is start at the bottom into a business may not be web design but it better than nothing, you wont get to be web designer right away, if the world was like that then everyone would be doing it.

May 1st, 2008 at 2:31 pmI note that Paul isn’t including his resume so that we can see his superior qualifications and experience, by which he’s able to make such statements…
Of course, someone who uses the words “most best” and “ain’t” will always best placed to offer advice.
Not.

“Why ain’t you got a job?”
Why ain’t you got grammar skills, son?

May 1st, 2008 at 3:46 pmSo what its called text talk, every one does it, instead of joking about it, i bet you do it on your mobiles and dont say you dont because your be a lier. I work for a finance company and our web designer has 20 years experience in businesses, no personal use of web designing so qualifications to be honest mean nothing to companies, and Jem the only qualifications you got is getting drunk.

May 1st, 2008 at 3:52 pmI am not a “lier”, Chris.
Did I say Chris? I meant Paul. Darn my slip-up.

May 1st, 2008 at 3:53 pmThis Paul guy is absolutely ridiculous. How do you think your company web designer got 20 years of experience dude? Someone obviously took a chance on him at some point in his career. Someone along the way has to take a chance on EVERYONE or else no one would have ANY experience or a job! Good grief. Your grammar is atrocious. Do you know what a run-on sentence is and how it makes you look completely unintelligent when you spout out all of your pointless drivel?
What’s your purpose in reading this blog entry anyway? It sure isn’t to comment thoughtfully on it, or you would have known after reading THE FIRST SENTENCE that Sarah wrote this HERSELF and did NOT copy it. Oh how I pity those who think they know everything but seem to actually know nothing. You poor man.
Sarah, quite obviously, you rock. I hope you are fortunate enough to find a job with a company that doesn’t employ numbskulls like this guy Paul.
Rachael
May 1st, 2008 at 3:56 pm20 years experience doesn’t automatically make you good, Paul. Neither does working in finance make you qualified to talk about who’s worthy of a job in web design and who is not.

May 1st, 2008 at 3:58 pmI am laughing so hard from this crap that is coming from “Paul’s” fingers. Seriously.

May 1st, 2008 at 3:59 pmWho’d have thought such an innocent blog entry would accumulate such dramarific comments? ![]()

May 1st, 2008 at 4:16 pmI love the fact that in “Paul”’s second comment he infers that companies take on only those who have experience and qualifications, and yet in his 3rd comment he suggests that in actual fact they mean nothing.
I am curious as to how someone could possibly have 20 years web design experience when the web itself has only existed in its current state since 1992 (that’s 16 years for those who can’t count) and at least 3-4 years of that it was primarily text-based.
Of course, that’s because Paul is a fictional character created by a seriously deranged mind. A mentally challenged individual with some unresolved issues. I am sure that Paul - or rather, Chris - is sat here masturbating to the attention he’s receiving because he lacks that kind of stimulation in real life. The very fact that his only comeback was an insult to one of my few character flaws - incidentally one that I overcame about 5 years ago - only lends to my theory of his incompetence as voice of authority speaking about employment in the web design sector.

May 1st, 2008 at 4:23 pmVery insightful article, Sarah! I enjoyed reading it! It really is interesting to think about how long the internet has been around and how revolutionary it’s been for society.
With that said…I think everything this “Paul” character has said is irrelevant and since what everyone else has said is on target…I’ll just agree that his stated opinions are stupid. :P

May 1st, 2008 at 4:23 pmBravo, bravo, Jem.
Some of his comments are definitely contradictory which I guess is to be expected if he is indeed using a ficticious name for himself. Maybe he gets confused as to which character he is pretending to be sometimes.

May 1st, 2008 at 12:27 pmThe Internet has to be the most best thing, but it also the worst thing in the world for being unsecure. What you should do is write your own report about it instead of copying it.
