NextGEN Gallery
Over the weekend I have been searching for a Wordpress photo album plugin. I do use Flickr, but I wanted to host my own images. I have to admit, I sometimes can’t be bothered to upload pictures to Flickr and would rather have them stored within my own web space. I tried a couple of plugins, including FAlbum. I wasn’t impressed with what I found, until I came accross. NextGEN Gallery.
NextGEN Gallery is different from the other photo album plugins I have encountered. It has a feature that the others lack - an admin backend. With this admin backend you can create, edit and delete galleries and albums. You are also able upload photographs. The admin is incorporated into your Wordpress control panel seamlessly.
What I love about this plugin is that it is easier to implement into your own site design. You don’t need to edit many files, all it takes is to edit one stylesheet to your liking. Depending on your design, you may not even need to edit it. I only had to edit a couple of lines of the stylesheet. To display photographs on a post or page, all you need to do is add shortcode to them and away you go.
You can find a wonderful tutorial series on how to use shortcode and many other tips and tricks for NextGEN Gallery at David’s Technical Musings. These tutorials helped me immensely and I’m sure they’ll be of help to you.
Here is my gallery that I have been working on. I still need to add it to the menu. Feel free to view it as a demo.

July 14th, 2008 at 9:13 pmWell I’m glad you found a plug-in that suited you in the end. The Flickr one I recommended I just use for its ability to insert resized Flickr photos into a post. I’m not into using it as a gallery on my site.
Your gallery looks good so far!
